Alva Noto is the musical alias of German artist and academic Carsten Nicolai (1965). Releasing music since 1996 and collaborating with composers such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Ryoji Ikeda, he has massively shaped contemporary electronic music. Since 1994, he has been running his influential NOTON label, which operated as part of Raster-Noton from 1999 to 2017. A successful visual artist, Nicolai created installations and exhibitions for some of the most prestigious art spaces around the world.
