Renowned Composer and pianist Akira Kosemura has announced his new album Mirai. Set for release 27 June on Decca Records, Mirai marks a new chapter in his career as Kosemura’s first-ever vocal project and features collaborations with a plethora of singers including Devendra Banhart, Benjamin Gustafsson, Baths, and Mr Hudson.
The first single, ‘Autumn Moon’ featuring Miyuki Hatakeyama, is out now. Set to lyrics drawn from the classical Japanese anthology Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, the track blends traditional influences with ambient electronic textures, offering a glimpse into the sonic world of Mirai.
Written during a period of reflection and shaped by his experience as a father, Mirai explores the future through Kosemura’s distinctive musical lens. Fusing elements of post-rock, neo-classical, electronica, and traditional Asian instrumentation, the album draws on his own roots and artistic influences.
“It was a great time for me to be able to bring out the various musical elements that influenced me from my young age to the present and incorporate them one by one into the album,” says Kosemura. “We would travel diverse worlds through the record, and it ends with utopian Japanese music.”
Spanning ten tracks, Mirai is both a personal statement and a hopeful vision. With contributions in multiple languages and a sound palette that includes dilruba, erhu, shakuhachi, koto, and shamisen.
Mirai is set for release on 27 June and will be available digitally and on vinyl. Listen to “Autumn Moon (feat. Miyuki Hatakeyama)” now here.
