Searching marked Awadis’ debut album, originally released in 2017, the record presents themes of exploration of identity and belonging. “This album is a part of my path… trying to find my place in music,” she explains. “Each composition represents a search, trying to discover myself in everyday life, whether it is being overloaded with work or emotions, depicting the ups or downs or simply enjoying a few happy moments.”
Her follow-up album Una Corda Diaries saw Awadis returning to the piano as a form of diary existing as “a door towards safety, comfort, and intimacy. Laying down emotions and anxiety, describing desires and fears, answers of the day and questions of tomorrow.” It features a collection of seven short piano pieces which initially started as improvisations. “As a child, I used to find my escape by playing the piano. Music is an instant art and can only be experienced in direct relation with silence and time. It is a space where I could move free and express all my feelings through playing. Therefore composing music became kind of my personal diary. Instead of typing words, I prefer to write melodies.”
Born in Lebanon and now based in Germany, Marie Awadis is known for her emotive compositions that blend classical music with Armenian folk influences. In addition to her solo work, she has contributed to Deutsche Grammophon’s project XII series and released her DG debut album, Études Mélodiques, in September 2024.
